How Much Paint Do You Need?

Calculating the right amount of paint helps you avoid running out mid-project or overspending on unused cans. The coverage of paint depends on the type (oil vs. latex), the surface texture, and the quality of the paint.

The Formula

Standard wall paint typically covers about 350 to 400 square feet per gallon (approx. 32 to 37 square meters). This calculator assumes a standard coverage rate.

Steps:
1. Calculate Wall Area = (Width + Width + Length + Length) × Height.
2. Subtract Area of Doors (approx. 21 sq ft each) and Windows (approx. 15 sq ft each).
3. Multiply by Number of Coats (usually 2).
4. Divide by coverage per gallon (350 sq ft).

FAQ

Do I need a primer?

If you are painting over a new drywall, a dark color, or a surface with stains, a primer is highly recommended. Some modern paints are "Paint and Primer in One," which can save a step.
